Once described by Walter Scott as the “finest stone town in England”, Stamford has reached a new audience in recent years through the captivating photography of Instagram’s @theoldbuilding. And now these iconic photographs have been preserved in print as a high-quality 184-page hardback.

The book is an elegant love letter to Stamford and collects extraordinary images from the historic centre of the much-admired town. Although contemporary – the photographs were captured between 2018-2023 – the atmospheric photographs take the reader on an unforgettable journey through Stamford’s fascinating history.

Often described as Bath on a small scale, Stamford’s Georgian townhouses, original shops, storied pubs and architecturally important features give Stamford a good claim to be the most beautiful market town in England. The town’s period architecture has been chosen as the backdrop to iconic films and series from Middlemarch to The Crown, Pride and Prejudice to Bleak House but as these photographs show, Stamford is every bit as beautiful in reality.
